Dani Poon was born in China Fujin but grew up in Hong Kong and received her territory design education in Australia. She designed a second series of stamps for Australia Post to commemorate the Chinese New Year – this year celebrating the loyal and hard-working ox.

Why did you study design? and where?

When I was a kid - I thought I was so good at drawing as a teenage, which means I must be good at design in Asian cultural perspective. Only much later I realized drawing hasn't got much to do with design communication, but thank God I do have right brain for design and brain storming. I studied in Melbourne Swinburne university School of Design.

How did you came across the opportunity to design the year of the monkey stamps?

Aust Post was looking for an Asian graphic designer at the last year of the zodiac cycle. I was freelancing in a design studio at the time and the boss knew that Aust Post was looking for a Chinese graphic design while he was in Aust Post xmas party. At the same day I also received an email from a designer friend that Aust post was looking for a chinese graphic designer, so I went for the tender and won the whole project (168 stamps over 12 issues).

Where did you find the inspiration for the stamps?

It is hard to say - I usually flick through books, design books, magazine, internet, stamp collections, but I can get inspiration everywhere even from just sitting in the garden day dreaming. The forms, shapes and colours around us are all very inspiring.

And do you have a working method?

Idea always comes first and then found the right execution. Without idea, any design is meaningless. With the stamps design, I enjoy inject a bit of humor and modern twist to the traditional content.

Any future plans in philately?

I am on my way relocating to Germany after marrying a German husband, so I might knock on the Deutsche Post door.
